Limited Transactions and History (Agents)

This scenario applies when transaction data is sparse, scoped to a subset, or covers a limited historical window. It describes the impact on analysis reliability and how to work within these constraints.

Data

Transaction data exists but is sparse, restricted to certain Products/Customers/Business Units, or available only for a limited historical window, like less than a year. In some environments, Quotes or Quote copies in a Datamart supplement the available transaction data.

Why it Matters

Small samples reduce the reliability of benchmarks, trends, and peer comparisons. Historical analysis is limited to the available period, and Quotes should not automatically be interpreted as realized sales.

Advice

  • State the coverage period and population explicitly.

  • Adjust time periods that are reviewed and prefer baselines that are not time based.

  • Distinguish realized transactions from Quotes and other non-realized commercial events.

  • Avoid broad generalizations when the sample is narrow. Expand the data window or population before interpreting results as representative.
